lyrics

1979, a Georgia barrier Island
a kid with a face stained with peach
where wild horses run over dunes
I too run feral down the beach
we three on holiday, in clothes of light
I was too young to understand
the distances that can live in a space so close
live oak casting shadows on the sand

when came the change?
or was this always who we were
familiar strangers born of blood and circumstance
long ago in a polaroid blur

I was so long gone in love with you,
Brighton in the winter
the passions of youth come calling so loud
willingly our bodies answer
in the Evening Star Pub throwing darts at the wall
like the words we’d throw at one another
so much of it now, I struggle to recall
but sure, we never quite recovered

When came the change?
Was it even a specific day?
Or the slow eroding of the ties that bind
Like the sea wall falling into the bay…
Battered by so many waves

now decades on the world's gone craven mad
the end of history never arrived
just when it seemed that democracy would chant eternal
the ancient enemy is again revived
now in the last gasps of the old republics, a culture splitting at the seams
the recent past is like those faded photographs
we cling hopefully to a fractured dream

When came the change?
Or was this always who we were
the butternut boys, the john wayne go-it-alone
A nation built on the lash and bones
when came the change?
we only see what’s in front of our eyes
while off the margins and in the periphery
the threat is very much alive
when came the change?
was it even a specific day?
Or the slow eroding of the ties that bind
like the sea wall falling into the bay
battered by so many waves
